Hooked up fax as joe indicated. fax works but have buzzing on phone line, any ideas how to eliminate buzzing?

if you press the hook button on the fax, or lift the handset, if your fax has one, do you hear buzzing on the dial tone from the fax machine?

if you plug the phone directly into the jack with out the fax connected to you hear the buzzing?

is this a hum, static? could you describe the buzz alittle better?
