Question:

Hooking up Neon Light in Bedroom?

Hi, I have a 12volt neon light tube and I want to have powered it in my room. I am quite good at wiring but I dont know what to use as the power source of the neons. And is this even possible?

This may be confusing, very hard to explain. :

I have an amplifier (600watt) in my room which is powering 2 speakers(100watt+). On the back of the amp there is a place for the outputs(speakers) they are for putting the red(pos.+) and black(neg.-) wires from the speakers into. So I am wondering if I can power the neons from joining the neon wires onto the speaker wires and then plugging it in to the back of the amp.

So is this a good idea?

On the back of the amp it says: Supply AC 220-240v

This is way to much power for the 12v neons right?

So the question I am asking is: Is it possible to power the neons in my room? and if so How?

Thanks for reading and any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks again, Daire

  1. i don't see why not... but watch out for falling neon lights :)

  2. You stand a very good chance of damaging the neon lights and/or your amplifier.  The 220-240v is the input to your amplifier, not what it puts out at the speaker terminals.  Neon lights aren't a proper load for a speaker output.  It doesn't supply anywhere near the right voltage or current.  The voltage that goes to speakers is AC at the audio frequencies of whatever sound you're playing at the time.  If you want to power the lights and they have a 12 volt input, get a 12 volt power supply.  The power box for the neon lights must have a current rating on it with the voltage rating.  Read that and make sure the power supply you get can supply the necessary current with the voltage.

Plus, are you sure the lights are neon?  They could be LED's.
