Question:

Hooking up Neon Lights in bedroom?

Hi, I have a 12volt neon light tube and I want to have powered it in my room. I am quite good at wiring but I dont know what to use as the power source of the neons. And is this even possible?

This may be confusing, very hard to explain. :

I have an amplifier (600watt) in my room which is powering 2 speakers(100watt+). On the back of the amp there is a place for the outputs(speakers) they are for putting the red(pos.+) and black(neg.-) wires from the speakers into. So I am wondering if I can power the neons from joining the neon wires onto the speaker wires and then plugging it in to the back of the amp.

So is this a good idea?

On the back of the amp it says: Supply AC 220-240v

This is way to much power for the 12v neons right?

So the question I am asking is: Is it possible to power the neons in my room? and if so How?

Thanks for reading and any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks again, Daire.

  1. speaker power is different if wont work the light, you need a small power supply for running cb radios and such or take a old power supply from something like (for example) cordless phone, keyboard, scanner, whatever just make sure its 12v and cut the end off the wire and splice it, electrical tape works just fine for taping the wires, a inline fuse is a good idea with small fuse.

  2. NO you do not power the neon via your speaker output.  First the speaker output voltage varies a lot with the sound.

Go to radio shack and get a 12V power source and just use that.  I don't mean a little wall wart, but a power source used to power car stereos, CB, etc. for use at home.

    Good Luck...
