Hooking up a new HP laptop to an LG 5.1 surround sound system?

Question

The Home Theater system has red and white audio inputs and the laptop has 2 headphone jacks. Buying the "Y" connection didnt bring sound into the sittuation. The connection itself fits both components and both work find separately, but noth as it should with that connection. Please let me know of any suggestions.

Usually it should work if you use an adapter that has a headphone jack on one side and chinch (RCA) on the other side. be sure to put the headphone jack in "Line out" and not in the "headphones" jack. This will work definitely as we do this often at work to test ipods, iphones and ofcourse laptops.
