So I bought an Optical Cable today for my PS3 and hooked it up to my Pioneer VSX-816 reciever for 5.1 surround sound. I noticed something after literally 5 minutes of playing Battlefield Bad Company online and I ignored it but after an hour it was just getting annoying. Everytime alot of explosions or gun fire occured, the sound would get choppy or cut out for a split second. As little as a split second sounds, its still really annoying when Im hearing loud bangs and all of a sudden a chop in the sound or distortion.

My reciever is set to standard which means its allowing the PS3 to send the audio setting (dolby digital, DTS, etc.) It said it was set to DTS at first, so I went into the PS3 settings and switched DTS off and started playing again, and than it said it was set to Dolby Digital but I was still getting the chopping.

Ive got the PS3 setting set to Optical > Bitstream, and I have AAC, Dolby Digital, and DTS checked off bc my reciever supports them. What could be the problem?

  1. I'm getting the same issue only mines when I stream m2ts from my pc to the ps3, it's streaming the video just fine, but the audio is choppy and cuts in and out every couple seconds.  I've changed it back to HDMI out for the sound and turned the tv speakers on and it plays fine without any distortion, but the minute I put it back through the optical it goes back to as described above.

I don't think however it has anything to do with my receiver, it's a Sony with full DOlby and DTS support although it's probably around 5-6 yrs old it was a top of the line model at the time, not to mention I use the other optical input for my HD with DishNetwork and it has and continues to work great with DTS and DOLBY, it also plays BluRay with the PS3 connected optically using the Dolby/DTS on the receiver without any problems.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open to them.  Don't really wanna invest in another receiver just yet as this one still works perfectly fine.
