I have an HDTV and a PS3 but use my panasonic DVD player as the surround sound. The DVD is a 5.1 digital surround sound system and has an AV input for TV/Aux. I was hoping to get the video quality from the PS3 using a the HDMI to my flat panel TV (it's good) and use the audio output from the TV via RCA jacks to the DVD's TV/Aux input for surround sound (didn't work). Can anyone help? I have great video quality (1080) but the sound is limited to what the TV speakers output. How can I get surround sound without degrading video quality? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

  1. i agree with the first guy. but if you really want to use the RCA output you need to go into the settings on your PS3, (sound settings/audio output settings/audio input connector) it will allow you to set how to output the sound.

  2. Were you successful before in running the TV/Aux in your DVD? It may just be a settings issue in your DVD player. Selecting the correct audio source to AUX or TV.

  3. Simply put, to get 5.1 surround from the PS3 you need to connect it to a receiver with a digital audio input (optical, coaxial, or HDMI, but it must be digital). If your Panasonic has no such input, you will need to upgrade.

You can connect the HDMI to the TV for video only, and connect analog RCA cables from the PS3 to the Panasonic. It won't be 5.1 surround, but it will sound better than the TV speakers. And maybe your Panasonic can apply some processing to simulate surround from the PS3?

Ultimately you will want to move up to a true digital AV receiver that can take advantage of the new advanced hi-rez audio available on Blu-ray discs.
