Hooking up wireless headphones into the tv

We have a Sony FD Trinitron WEGA tv. We bought Radio Shack wireless headphones to use with them so my husband could listen to the tv as loud as he wanted, but we could still hear the tv as well. We get the sound to come out of the headphones, but other people in the room don't get any sound at all.
