Hopes high for Shangani in the Coffin Mew Solicitors Maiden Hurdle at Fontwell on 7th March
The Class 5 Coffin Mew Solicitors Maiden Hurdle is to be staged at Fontwell over two miles, two furlongs and 110 yards on Wednesday, 7th March. The winner will get entitled to the purse worth £1, 689 while the lineup includes fourteen runners.
Shangani, Giant’s Causeway’s six-year-old bay gelding out of mare Tanzania, finished his seasonal debut with a decent second position. Shangani was a part of the lineup of Haygain Hay Steamers – Clean Healthy Hay Novices’ Hurdle Division 1 on 26th February at Towcester over two miles.
The race that had a lineup of thirteen was won by Asaid, the 8/13 favourite of the race, who had Jack Quinlan onboard, the winning pair led the field by two lengths.
Shangani finished right after the winner with Sam Thomas riding.
Racing through the wire third after the winner was Cloudy Bob.
Shangani is very lightly raced as he did not race at all in 2011 and then made a start on 26th February which was at a year’s and seven months’ gap. If his comeback culminated in a second position then his potential for excelling further in the next start is the most likely possibility.
Shangani has only won once during his career and the new season has to offer something better and worthwhile for him only if he improvises the performance that he gave in his seasonal debut.
Sutton Storm, Emperor Fountain’s seven-year-old bay gelding out of mare Rock Rose, got placed in his seasonal debut which reflects his ability to finish closer to the winner if not be the winner himself.
On 21st January, Sutton Storm cracked into the new season by taking part in the Bathwick Tyres “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle at Wincanton over two miles. The race was won by Waterunder who dominated the field of eighteen by a mere half lengths’ distance.
Joining the winner on the other end of the wire was the 5/6 favourite of the race, It’s A Gimme. Settling third behind the winner was Sutton Storm.
The seven-year-old bay gelding has remained winless in the four career starts that he has made till yet. His fifth career race and second outing of the new season might just as well bless him with a victory in case he does not let go off the consistent performance that has ended him with a third position in three out of the four starts.
