Hopes of rescheduling the Bahrain Grand Prix as good as over - Formula 1 update
Recent reports from Bahrain suggest that the FIA and the authorities made the right decision by postponing the Bahrain Grand Prix as the protests in the country became more violent since last week, making it even more dangerous to hold the event.
The political situation in the country stabilized in the beginning of March but due to the recent developments in the country, observers have expressed that the Saudi Arabian forces might be deployed in the country in the near future. A spokesman from the
Pentagon warned that as a result of this development, “the move could be provocative or inflame sectarian tensions.”
Protests were held throughout the weekend in Bahrain, as a result of which, thousands remained camped at Manama’s Pearl roundabout demanding for a political change in the kingdom. There were even more violent clashes between the security forces and demonstrators
due to safety issues because of which most governments are advising their citizens to avoid travelling to Bahrain until the situation in the country stabilizes.
The FIA revealed last week that they are going to give the authorities in Bahrain until the 1st of May in order to decide whether the Bahrain Grand Prix can be a part of the 2011 Formula 1 season later on or not.
The Bahrain Grand Prix was expected to be the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season and it was scheduled to take place on March 13. However, since the race had to be cancelled, the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season shifted to the
Australia Grand Prix, commencing from the 27th of March now.
The 2011 Formula 1 season was expected to be the first season in the history of the sport to host 20 races in a single season but it seems that won't possible if the political scenario in Bahrain keeps deteriorating, which seems highly likely at the moment.
