  1. Well, I'm certainly no expert when it comes to rail logistics but you might want to contact the nearest railroad(s) that your spur connects to so they can give you prices on what it will cost to transport (they can also move the cars over your rails if you need them to it will just cost a bit more).  Having said that, you may also want to consider purchasing your own switcher locomotive to move the cars across the rails you own, which may be cheaper than having the railroad do it although that is something you would just need to look into if you're interested.  Best of luck, it sounds like an interesting venture!

  2. It comes down to money.

The cars must meet specifications as set forth by the FRA.  There are many parameters to consider.

Does the brake system need to be upgraded, such as new brake shoes, excessive piston travel, condition of bake heads, brake beams, rods, etc.?  $$$$$$

Are the cars equipped with roller bearings (anything with old style friction bearings cannot be moved through interchange)?

What is the last COTS (Cleaned Oiled Tested and Stenciled) date?  This overhaul is required every 10 years and is posted on the side of each car.  If not recently performed, $$$$$$.

Are the wheels in compliance, free of excessive tread build-up or flat spots?  If not, $$$$$$.

Are all components of the draft gear up to par?  If not, $$$$$$.

How old are the cars?  50 years is the time limit set forth by the FRA.  Cars older than 50 years must be retired.

What condition are the bottom doors in?  They must be closed for transport.  If they need repair, $$$$$$.

    Insurance.  $$$$$

I would recommend a lot of homework before diving into this pool.  There are many hidden pit falls for the uninitiated.
