Question:

Horrible experience at a car dealer, what can be done about it?

We just bought a Nissan Versa (which we love) from a dealer. We were told that ABS and cruise control (both of which we wanted) came standard. Then we were told to pick out a car on the lot that we liked and then they would search for an equivalent car in manual transmission. Thinking ABS and c/c were standard we picked out a car. Turns out it didn't have these things and now we've got a car without these options. We were also told that it would take 24-48 hours to get the car, it took 4 days. My boyfriend took the car in today to have a spoiler installed. After doing so, they washed the car (which we didn't ask them to do) and scratched the sh*t out of it. There are literally white marks down the sides and in a few places it looks like it was rubbed with sandpaper. They are telling us that to get ABS and c/c we will have to pay more for a different car. And for the scratches, they will try to buff them out on Monday. I have never been more upset. Is there anything that can be done?

  1. Sit down and speak with the owner of the dealer and hash out a resolution. If that fails, contact Nissan directly and speak to them about you dissatisfaction. Tell the owner you were straight up lied to about those options and you want an exchange.

  2. Talk to the senior guy first (have a written check list in hand of all the problems).  Don't go in as a woman alone--they're inclined not to take women seriously--have your husband be there too.

If that doesn't work, go over his head.  Write a LETTER to the Nissan head (always put it in a written letter--not email).  State the dates, problems, name of dealer, etc.  [personally, I'd send it certified mail return receipt].  Send a COPY of the letter to the dealer with a cover page saying, 'If you recall, we spoke on May 5 about the problems we had re: our new purchase.  Unfortunately, the problems have not been resolved to date.  Therefore we have contacted Niss...copy enclosed....something like that.

And try the BBB as well.

But everything has to be in letter form--it makes an impact and it's important for documentation, to show what you've done to try to get the problem corrected---although with the BBB, you can file a complaint online.

  3. definitely call nissan usa.

off topic: your boyfriend put a spoiler on a nissan versa? wtf?

  4. Contatc the regional rep they will get things done for you as they can also strip the nissan name away from the dealership

  5. Talk with the senior representative of the dealership and if still not satisfied, ask for help from the city/county consumers affairs office.

  6. What does your sales agreement say if it says ABS and Cruise, then the dealer has to cough up the equipment ( you don't just throw and ABS system on a car ) if not you bought a car without it. My question is why did you accept delivery without examining the car first and making sure the equipment was there. They all look the same, it's the details that will kill you.
