Question:

Horrible smell in bathroom?

We've had problems with a toilet clogging in a bathroom, so no one takes a number 2 in there anymore, but it reeks like nothing I've ever smelt before, and the smell has been lingering for about 6 months. Could something have died in there that I don't know about?

  1. it sounds like the wax seal for the toilet has been breached , i would suggest resetting the toilet . the new wax ring should stop the odors

  2. If the bathroom is not used that much, the water in  your p trap could be evaporating and letting the odor from your septic tank come back up the pipes. This happened to us. We bought a brand new house a couple of years ago and it's just the two of us. We never used the third bathroom and I KNOW the smell you speak of. So now every week instead of just cleaning I make sure I run water in the tub and the sink and I try to remember to flush the toilet 2-3 times a week! That has taken care of our problem.

  3. Things You’ll Need:

    Toilet bowl cleaner and brush

Tile cleaner and scrub brush or sponge

    Antibacterial and disinfectant spray

    Scum remover

    Paper towels or washcloths

    Broom and floor mop

    Gloves

    Trash bin with plastic liner

    Paper towels or washcloths

    How to Remove Odor Sources

    ***********************************

    Step1

Scrub the bathtub where dirt and grime create nasty and stinking stains. Apply a bathroom tub and tile cleaner and let it soak for a few minutes. This will give the product enough time to soften the dirt and grime, making it easier for you to scrub them off. Rinse well. Towel dry.

    Step2

    Scrub the shower stall.

Scrub the shower stall where dirt, soap and calcium leave a smelly residue. A scum remover product is most effective in cleaning shower stalls thick with water spots and soap scum. Apply, scrub with a brush or sponge, rinse off and towel dry.

    Step3

Wash and dry all the accessories in the bathtub and shower area. Be sure to clean the undersides of soap, body wash and hair care containers where mold tends to grow.

    Step4

Clean the toilet bowl, which is a major source of bathroom stench. Apply toilet bowl cleaner to the inside walls of the bowl, scrub with a brush, making sure to reach the underside of the rim and then flush. Use an antibacterial spray and paper towels to clean the outside of the entire toilet bowl and water closet. Pay special attention to the rim and under the seat. Get on your knees to reach the bottom and back areas of the bowl.

    Step5

Clean the vanity counter and washbasin (sink) where odor-causing scum and mold gather quickly. Scrub the counter with a tile cleaner. Rinse and wipe dry. Use a scum remover to remove soap scum and water spots from the fixtures. Wipe dry. Wash and dry all accessories that get in contact with water.

    Step6

Sweep the floor to remove dust and hair, then mop with detergent soap and water to remove everything that landed there to deteriorate or decay. Rinse and wipe dry.

    Step7

Replace all curtains, floor mats and used towels that reek musty odors from bacteria and mildew.

    Step8

Empty and disinfect all trash bins.

    How to Prevent Odor Causes

    **********************************

    Step1

Wash or replace shower curtains and floor mats regularly. The more people that use the showers, the more frequently the curtains and floor mats should be washed or replaced.

    Step2

Replace sponges, loofas and other bath implements regularly because bacteria grow on them very quickly.

    Step3

Refresh bath, hand and face towels as often as necessary.

    Step4

Dry the counter and sink area after washing your hands and face to minimize mildew and scum buildup.

    Step5

Ventilate the bathroom or keep the exhaust fan on for a few minutes after every bath or shower to reduce moisture that encourages molds and mildew.

    Step6

Empty the trash bins often. Use plastic liners for easy collection and disposal.

    Tips :

Eliminating bathroom odors is best achieved by cleaning the whole bathroom. While you're at it, don't forget to clean the mirrors.

Use an old toothbrush to get to the corners and edges of sinks and fixtures where mold and scum accumulate.

Strive to use only earth-friendly, non-toxic and biodegradable cleaning products.

Wear gloves when using chemical cleaners. Use aprons or your housecleaning attire when using products that contain chlorine bleach.

  4. go to the roof & check the sewer vent stack to make sure it isn`t plugged

  5. If the toilet is blocked up try throwing a couple of buckets of cold water down it as that is the only way i know that unblocks the toilet, then put a strong thick bleach down it, also go and check out your water tank to see if anything has died in it, (i hope not as that can be your drinking water), or perhaps you could check out your outside drain, lift the lid and take a look as that could well be blocked if so you can get some rods, (very much like a chimney sweeps brushes without the brush) and a hose pipe and clear the blockage that way by pushing them down the drain and running the hose at the same time. Hope one of these things work as i have done these things when i had a similar problem and they do work.

  6. Flush the toillette LOL
