Question:

Horse's water trough?

I'm sick of lugging small water buckets a day to the back field for my horse since his water trough broke in the wind (it was a hardened plastic 40 gallon one but still broke in strong winds) :-[ Anyway, now I'm stuck without a water trough so I'm having to cart water into those 5 gallon TubTrug thingies. Where can I get a cast iron bath or a big water trough for free/cheap near me in the North East UK? Any ideas of anything I can use other than what I've mentioned? Thanks!!

  1. Try TSC if they have one where you live. Or if they have a True Value where you live. Or a Southern States if they have them where you live! These are all great stores that have exactly what you need!

  2. How about your localFreecycle site? Might get lucky with ann old bath.

  3. dont use an old bath they have sharp corners and could hurt your horse.  get a plumber to come and fit a metal trough.

  4. I use plastic 55 gallon barrels.  Used ones can be bought for $10 but just make sure they were not used to hold anything that is bad for your horses.  The people selling them usually know.  I cut the top about 1/3 off when I want a big one.  That gives me the top for a feed trough (if it has plugs in) and about 40 gallons or so on the bottom half for a water trough.

If you want to build a wooden or metal frame you can cut them lengthwise to make two 25 gallon troughs.

They also make excellant raised garden containers and when filled with potting soil will produce very well and seldom develop weeds.

  5. old bath tubs work great

  6. HIYA I WOULD HAVE SAID FREECLYCLE UT THEIR IS NO POINT REAPETING IT.

BUT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM BUT LUCKILY MY MATE OWNS A DUMP YARD AND HE FOUND ME A GIANT BIG I DUNOO TUB THING AND I USE THAT, IT HOLDS LIKE 100LITRES!

  7. I bought some 8 foot galvanized troughs from a farm sale for £12 each . Brand new but dented.

It's always worth looking ( they even have the ballcock system so eventually I can pipe them in and make them auto filling)

Prior to that we had these big blue barrels ( from farms) cut in two and a hosepipe that ran all the way up the field from the tap in the yard ( it was a pain especially as the tractor kept going over the pipe and  splitting it so it had leaks and repairs everywhere)

Edit. Lol, no corners on a roll top - that's why it's called a roll top.

Just remember to take the taps off.

  8. I would invest in a automatic waterer. You don't have to worry about filly them up and they won't freeze during winter.

  9. If you buy another, i highly recommend getting a tough rubber made one. Try something like this http://www.premier1supplies.com/detail.p... With rubber, it is harder to break.

  10. I live in the U.S. and if you have a WalMart store, you can pick up a nice tub for only $4 - $5

  11. you could find a trash can thats wider than taller, or get an automatic water filler.
