  1. cedar also repels many bugs - always a plus in the barn...

  2. Pine because if your horse eats 'em, they aren't going to get sick.  It's also VERY absorbent and smells nice.

It's probably a LOT cheaper than cedar, I'll betcha!

  3. 1. Cedar shavings contains tanic acid which may upset some horses tummys and can make them listless. On the up side, they smell good and don't have splinters.

    2. Pine shavings are absorbent, and they also smell very nice.

    3. My favorite however, is fir shavings.  Partly because they are readily available in my area.  But also because they are very fluffy, making them very absorbent so cleanup is easy. They also smell divine!

    4. My least favorite is sawdust of ANY kind, just because of the dust factor.  On the upside, the ph level is lower and there tends to be less waste because you only pick up the material that you want to get rid of.

  4. Cedar is the way to go. Here in south Texas we have an abundance of cedar(woohoo) its great. It realy cuts down the flys.

  5. Cedar is best. The good things about it are unlimited.

  6. cedar rocks cool bananas

  7. Cedar smells very nice and keeps away moths but it also has an oil in it that can be very irritating to mucous membranes. Aka, eyes, nose, mouth. I think horses have tear ducts to rinse their eyes out but I still wouldn't use cedar. I'm sure it's way more expensive than pine too!

  8. i like the way cedar smells

  9. corn cob! much more absorbant and you will never smell urine.

If i had to choose between pine and cedar i would use cedar or the big flakes of pine. They are less dusty. Cedar smells good too but wood is not at absorbant as the corn.

I like to put straw over corn cob. Our horses lay down in it all the time and the corn cob makes the straw easy to clean.

  10. i would go with cedar

  11. Oh, definitely cedar! It smells wonderful and keeps away moths.
