Question:

Horse Bot Eggs On My Horse

by  |  earlier

I found quite a few bot eggs on my horses legs today, I do not know how long they have been there as I have been on holiday..

I tried picking them out by hand but there are too many, and I do not have one of those knives that take them out.

  1. There are a few alternative methods to knives (although thats the thing that works best for me)

Combing with fine toothed comb, similar to a flea comb, can pull the bot eggs off- - a metal one is usually best.

A  razor blade, or disposable razor, used very carefully can be used to scrape the eggs off.

Apply vinegar to kill the bot eggs.

A lava stone grooming block can  be used used to remove bot eggs.

Spraying with Savlon or other antiseptic liquid can make the eggs drop off.

Pick the bot eggs off with your fingernails - this takes time!

Use sandpaper to rubb the eggs off

  2. You can get a knife to take them out, but there is something quite a bit cheaper, and it works really well.  We have always called them "f**t blocks" or "sulfer blocks" because they smell aweful, they are kind of like a pumice stone for horses, use that, and it will take them right off.

  3. Just get a normal butter knife and use the other side to flick them off.

  4. If you don't have a bot knife, you can use a non serrated edged sharp knife. You can also use Pam cooking spray. Just spray the eggs real good. The oil will smother the eggs. You can also spread on cooking oil.

Be sure to worm your horses within the next 2 weeks and then again in about 30 days.

  5. Buying a bot knife is a good idea, but als what helps is to douse the area with hot water, this kills the eggs.

  6. You need to get some mentholated spirits and kill them then you need to get a bot egg knife and scrape them off.

  7. Whats your question? From what I can gather, you need to get 'one of those knives that take them out'.

  8. Use a razor. Don't shave the hair off, just kind of scrape on top of the eggs and they should come off. Try not to upset your horse too much though so he/she does not dance around while you are using the razor. Also, have you heard of the mini shavers used for a horses nose? http://www.equinesource.com/browseproduc... These work GREAT and that is what I use to keep the bot eggs off my horses. Also, we use Pyrhana fly spray and it seems to keep the flies from ever laying eggs anymore. Hope this helps!
