  1. I wouldn't put the breed of the horse as the priority; but the temperament. Just ring about a few horses. You need a horse which suits your needs whether it's a appaloosa or a clydesdale. Put the breed of the horse a little lower on the priority list - yet, don't get me wrong, it is important, just not AS important. :)

    Good luck.

  2. I Think Quarter Horse,, They Are The Best Horse Known To Man Kind,, They Are Easy And Most Of Them Are Very Calm,, That Would Be About The Best Horse Out There,, Or A Paint,, Try Not To Get To Much White Unless You Want A Sun-Burnt Horse

  3. whatever breed you decide, adopt a rescued horse. there are tens of thousands of horses in the US that are auctioned off to slaughter houses to be so as meat in japan, italy, belgium, and so on. i have a rescued appaloosa mare that was deemed insane and was suposed to be uthenized but a rescue group stepped in and took her. she was insane because she was severely beaten by a man who needless to say wont be out of jail in my lifetime. he did all sorts of evil things to her like punching her in the jaw to break it. she starved and was aggressive to people. today she's the sweetest horse you could ever imagine. she's wicked safe and loves people. every horse in her previous situation deserves a second chance. and not all rescued horses are crazy, the horses in auction are more commonly horses that their owners no longer can keep or want. once you figure out the breed, look into rescue groups or auctions around you.

  4. Connemara

    Welsh Mountain

    Haflinger

Or just look around and find the perfect mate.

  5. get a quarter horse

  6. I say don't even think about the breed of horse. Honestly. Each is an individual, and the perfect horse for you might be a breed you didn't expect at all! Just look around and see what's available, and just go try out some horses with an open mind.

I used to HATE arabians. But I got put on one one day, and I rode him for two years. I absolutely LOVED him. I've never had that sort of connection with a horse.

This way, you're sure to meet a wonderful partner.

  7. Once it's tamed and Australian Brumby is the one I always ride. I love them. They are the most beautiful and loyal horse I have experienced. Great looking animals.

  8. A lot of your answerers don't take into consideration that you live in Australia and are naming off American breeds of horses that you do not have on your continent or if you do, they are quite rare at this time (The Mustang, Appaloosa and Morgan, just to name a few.).

Quarter Horses and Paints (Which are a breed in it's own, derived from horses of colour, mostly AQHA and TB heritage) both have a LOT of TB blood lines in them and I've known a LOT of AQHA (Quarter Horses) with crappy feet.

When I lived in Cottesloe (On Perth's coastline) back in the 1960's, a REAL Quarter Horse was something unheard of except in issues of "Hooves and Horns" and most of the grade horses had trotter breeding.

Back then I had a QH colt and a grade mare back in the US and it felt VERY weird sitting on a mare who paced when I lived in Australia.

I still have QHs and over the years have trained a LOT of different breeds for clients.  I'm not sure WHY your mom doesn't want you to have an Arabian, I've known several that were as quiet as most QHs (I had one who buddied up with my TB (Also as quiet at most QHs, sometimes more quiet.) and they are a desert breed which tend to do well barefooted and are easy keepers.

It depends upon the horse you find which will fit your needs.  Don't limit it to this breed or that.

    Best of luck.

  9. Mustangs have hooves like rocks.

I'm not a paint fan myself because too many people breed for color instead of things like good hooves so I don't think you'll have much better luck there than you would with a TB.  But then again, it all depends on the individual horse.

A Morgan might be good.  Or a Morab.  Then you get some of that Arab you are looking for.

I don't know if you are interested in a gaited horse but I once rode a blue papered Missouri Foxtrotter for a lady, and that horse had magnificent hooves...and he was a nice little horse too.

  10. The horse you may be after is a Spanish Barb or a New Forest Pony

They I know are the most easiest to hand and your mother is right, Pure Arabians are stroppy and can turn agenst you in a matter of seconds....

  11. uhmm...Tennesse walkers are good horses.

i have a quarter horse arabian and

i think they are great all around horses.

they get to be a good sixe to.

  12. You can go for a Morgan horse or an Appaloosa.

  13. i have 3 mustangs and 1 appaloosa also a appy/mustang,1 tennessee walker/qaurter 2 paints and  a quarter horse in my opinion the mustangs and appaloosa have the best hooves ever. My paints hooves are always needin takin care of and my other 2 are always wind up with cracks or uneven my mustangs on other hand are even and seem like they dont grow as much all i can say is i love MUSTANGS.

  14. I would suggest an appaloosa because they have the speed, agility and temperment to make them fun, they are very bold, they are sometimes stocky and hold up to a lot.. I have started to see more and more appaloosas like mines 14.1 and shes jumping 3ft.

  15. Best suggestion I have is start checking around in your area to see what is for sale. Aussy Stock horses are good. Would like one of those myself. Quarter Horses are a good breed. Arabs are extremely intelligent. They remember every mean thing that was ever done to them. The best way to train them is the same way you would train a mule. (Mules are very smart!) In my book 'Paints' are still a color and not a 'breed' I would not buy a half arab/QH. They can be wonderful horses but you need to have a lot of experience to make it work. Look around where you live. Go take some test rides. Just put your name out there and people who have horses to sell will find you. You might find something you weren't expecting and it will be a perfect fit.

  16. To me, I think your best bet would be with a Quarter Horse (they are so fast and smart!) but since you are looking for other suggestions, I'm going to say a mustang (super strong hooves), Morgan, Tenesse Walking Horse, or simply a half arabian half quarter horse.

  17. Quarter Horses have always been a very solid, loyal, calm, and well balanced temperament horses in my past experiences. They usual range from 24.3-6 hands, so height shouldn't be a problem. They can do all forms of riding, and are highly intelligent. They have excellent powerful conformation in appearance. But, they are also very fun horses to ride, and since you are an experienced rider there are endless possibility for you and your Quarter Horse to grow.

And I also agree with your mom arabians are high strung and tend to be a handful, they also arent very loyal to they owners.

    Best Wishes [;

    Liz

  18. appys are good for trail.. as are quarter horses and paints. i also have a mustang and she is just wonderful on trail and actually everything ive done with her she excels at. mustangs don't normally get to tall though. she is almost full grown and she is about 14.2 or 3.

about the hooves.. any horse with black hooves are normally pretty good. they are alot stronger than a horse with white hooves so just look for that when you are buying your new horse. hope i helped!

  19. Arabs have the best hooves, in general.  Try a quarab and hope the Arab in him gives him the hooves of steel.

  20. Saddlebreds are tall, Morgans are normally 14.4hh or around
