Durring the middle ages they were popular mount for the knights with the continued infusions of Andalusian blood created a spirited that was still strong enought to cope with the weight of the armor.

From the middle ages to early 1700's there was a deline in the breed as interested was focused on the breeding of mules in the area.

An ancestor of this breed was bred in Italy befor the beginning of the Roman Empire.

    #2 - well i know that the most popular mounts for knights were shires and other draft horses and derivatives of these breeds because they were the only ones strong enough to carry all the armour that the knights wore (and that the horses had to wear too)

    #3 - now i know i've read somewhere that the bashkir is bred for it's milk

    well, this is the best i can do. i'm interested to see what the answers are, just to satisfy my own curiosity.
