i have a gorgeous paint mare with 2 blue eyes. When purchassed her papers were missing. How do

How do I trace her lineage? Or shall I say bloodlines.

I am considering breeding her and want to know who her parents are and even her age if that can be traced as well. I am willing to pay to have this done but don't know where to go or what the steps would be.

I HAVE ALREADY TRIED BACK TRACKING TO ALL HER PREVIOUS OWNERS AND THAT OPTION IS OUT

  1. DNA will only help if both of her parents were DNA tested. Some labs can give you a percentage of what bloodlines she matches with. Sorry to say, most breed assoc. won't help. If she was DNA'd at some point then she would be on file. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do. Your vet can also put you in contact with a lab that will do a DNA test. I doubt you will be able to find anything out on her. We run a rescue and have tried this route many times. After a lot of run around, we still had no answers. Sorry.

  2. You can get your horse a dna test and it will tell you some things about your horse. It can't tell you who the parents are unless you already have an idea of who they might be and can get them tested. If the horse has been registered and you know the registered name, you can find out from the APHA what her pedigree is. Here is a place where you can get your horse tested.

  3. if she is a paint I would start with APHA and talk to them. I am not sure if they keep a DNA registry because I think only the major ones like AQHA/JC/and similar purebreed registries (not color registries) track DNA records. IF you think she might be part quarter horse you can contact AQHA for a DNA kit. I think they start at about $35 and all you do is pull some hair out of the mane or tail and stick it to a piece of paper and mail it in. They will contact you in a couple weeks with the results. We recently had to do our mare for foal parentage verification and it was a lot easier than I anticipated. Hopefully one of them can point you in the right direction.

you can also get her papers based soley on color it will just be listed as pedigree unknown. But at least you will have some documentation of ownership.

  4. Did you try calling the paint or pinto association.  They can do wonders with a picture, and they could even do a DNA test, which usually just requires a hair from the mane or tail.  Hope this helps.

  6. if you go to the paint association I think you could have your vet draw her blood and send it in to the association with a couple  picture of her. If they find the traces of her sire and d**n. she can be registered as a paint because any breed can be registered if they are a color breed and have two paint parents... some breeds can be double registered or triple registerd... because I have a 14.3 hh reg american saddlebred paint and she is triple registered(POA, ASHA, APHA)... When foals are born you send in there blood pictures and if the blood matches a reg. breed then you should be all set. If that works then you would have the parent and could reg. as a breed as well. Well I hope thats works out for you... good luck and I guess the good thing if this all works for you, you can name her what you would like (show name).. But i know the registry has that power because thats how they check the foals. Contact the APHA and tell them your predictament... have your vet draw some blood and send it in to them. GOOD LUCK
