Question:

Horse Drools Before We Feed Him?

by  |  earlier

I don't think it is clover because he doesn't do it all the time...he just does it right before I dump his feed into his bucket. He is a 21y/o grey Arabian. He is fed last out of thr three horses, could it just be him getting impatient/worked up?

Thanks for any help :)

  1. I have a 21yr old hrose too that does the same thing. He just gets excited and slobbers while he is eating. But I would reccomend a vet check(which I am going to do to my horse) Also you might think about getting him seen by an equine dentist(dont just get a float)

    Hope this helps!

  2. It's natural. I slobber when I eat too.

  3. He's excited try and feed him first if the drool really bugs you. You should be feeding him first anyways after all the years of hard work he has done for you=]

we feed our horses oldest to youngest

  4. It's just anticipation, his mouth is watering because he knows he's going to be fed. Nothing unusual about that.

  5. No big deal. Some horses drool.  Assuming that's the only time he drools, not anything to worry about, and assuming you have his teeth checked regularly, and he's not dropping his feed or quidding.

  6. LOL!

I've been known to do that myself.

It's similar to Pavlov's dogs. He drools in anticipation of his feed.

It's not unusual and no need for alarm.
