Okay, i know there will be a lot of variety in the answeres to this Q but what is the average annual cost of owning a horse (California, USA). oh and this would be if i boarded it somewhere, not kept it at home or anything else

  1. I live in VT and my mom drew up how much it would be to own a horse, when we did a girl scouts program on horses.

    The total came to over $2000 a year. Thats with no major health problems (just one vet visit a year, for shots, etc),minimal grain (and we get our grain from a Private mill, so its about $8.50 a 50lb bag). That's not boarding it. But, we have to pay for hay in the  winter, so it levels out some. But, board isn't cheap its at least $250 for outside board here, and only goes up from there.


  2. Hmm... Probably about a thousand a year, possibly (but not likely) less, more likely more. Remember, you'd have to have the vet visits, you'd have to ride the horse every day, you'd probably have to pay someone to muck out the stalls while you're at school or work... Then there's the tack you have to pay for, and the food and water buckets... Probably more like a couple thousand the first year (not counting the price of the horse)
