Horse Racing: Americain wins the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup
The Emirates Melbourne Cup run in Flemington that took place on the 1st of November, was won by the French raider Americain. The Group I 2 miles race was run on the turf track. Americain held off So You Think, the racehorse who was considered to be the strongest
contender of the meet. So You Think was expected to win this event and add a win to his list. The most recent starts won by the colt are the Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes under the jockey Steven Arnold.
The second place was clinched by Maluckyday at Flemington while Zipping was the third place finisher. The jockey of the victorious horse, Gerald Mosse has ridden winner horses in some of the biggest races around the world.
In a post race interview, the delighted jockey was reported as saying, “Every Group I is a big moment. But with a crowd like that my throat was getting a bit tight. I never drink champagne but tonight I might.” Mosse went on to say, “I won the Arc on Saumarez
in 1990 but I am 43 now and winning today feels even better than my Arc win.”
Appreciating his racehorse, Mosse said, “The job is so easy when we have the best horse. I took my time and up the straight I could see the favourite going through and he had been travelling a bit too keenly all the way and I knew when I pressed he would
answer. I knew I was going to catch him so I took my time in getting to the winning post.”
The victorious racehorse, Americain is owned by Gerry Ryan and Kevin Bamford, based in Melbourne. The colt is the son of Dynaformer and has been trained in France. His pleased owner, Ryan said, “It has been our dream. Five years ago we planned this and here
we are. We said let’s try and find a Melbourne Cup runner, let alone a winner. This is what you dream of ever since you are a kid.”
Ryan further added, “The plan now is to go for Hong Kong Vase next month. He (Americain) will then go back to Alain in France and will come back here for another crack at the Cup next year.”
So You Think’s trainer Bart Cummings said at the end of the start, “The winner is a good horse. Our horse would have liked the ground a bit better but I’m not making excuses, the better horse won.”
