Horse Racing: Borel named Twice The Appeal’s jockey for the Kentucky Derby
The competent rider, famous for guiding three of the winners of the past four Kentucky Derbies, Calvin Borel, has been picked as the jockey to be the riding Twice The Appeal for this year’s Kentucky Derby.
Twice The Appeal, under the care of trainer, Jeff Bonde, managed to get himself an entry in the Kentucky Derby after he put up an impressive performance in the Grade 3 event of the Sunland Derby on March 27th. He finished at the first place in
the race while Mine That Bird, the 50-1 winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby under Borel, ended up finishing fourth.
While talking with representatives of a horseracing website, Jerry Hissam, Borel’s agent, told that Twice The Appeal’s connections made an offer to Borel to mount the horse in the Kentucky Derby earlier this week.
He revealed that although talks with connections of Master Of Hounds were also in process, Hissam decided to finalise his decision in favour of Twice The Appeal with Borel’s approval and consent since Master of Hound’s connections were also in contact with
two other jockeys.
Hissam said that Calvin took some time to watch replays of Twice The Appeal’s races and was impressed by the horse’s general performance, especially his strong finish, which is why he is eager to partner with him.
The other two horses who gained victory under the charge of Calvin Borel, most noted for his rail-skimming rides in the Kentucky Derby, are Street Sense in 2007 and Super Saver last year.
Meanwhile Dialed In, the most likely favourite for the Derby, ran a length of four furlongs at Palm Meadows in Florida in 48.40 seconds on Thursday.
Dialed In’s trainer, Nick Zito, proudly told reporters from bloodhorse.com that the horse’s performance was exactly what he wanted, especially the finish in the last 12 seconds. He also said that the horse is set to go and claims that whatever may happen
the horse will not be short in the Derby.
Dialed In is supposed to arrive at Churchill Downs on Saturday and will practice on the track at least once.
