Horse Racing: Champion racehorse Super Saver retires
Super Saver, the winner of the Kentucky Derby was retired on Thursday evening because of his trainer’s concern over his prolonged bone issues and bruises in his legs. It has also been stated that the racehorse will stand as a stud after his retirement.
Elliott Walden, the manager of WinStar Farm racing said that Super Saver was tested last month for the suspected bruises on his legs. The tests revealed that the champion thoroughbred had developed bruises in his legs and thus could no longer run in the
way he had in the races that he contended and won this racing season. He also added that he was anticipating a full recovery but unfortunately things did not turn out the way he was expecting them to.
Walden was also reported as saying when the tests revealed Super Saver’s bruised legs, “He has nothing more to prove.”
The Todd Pletcher trained thoroughbred champion was ridden by jockey Calvin Borel when he bagged his first Derby victory. The talented racehorse held off Ice Box by 2 ½ lengths in the Kentucky Derby that was run at Churchill Downs on the 1st of
May.
However, Super Saver could not make it to the Triple Crown since he finished its second jewel the Preakness Stakes in the eighth slot. After the discovery of the bruises, it was decided by WinStar limited that the three year colt shall be put to rest for
60 days before any final decision about his retirement.
The WinStar president Doug Cauthen said, “We ultimately felt like it was best for him to retire now and we are thrilled to have the rare opportunity to stand a horse of his calibre here where he was born and raised.”
The racehorse has proved himself as the champion of the Derby. After setting a stakes record in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes run at Churchill Downs last fall, the racehorse went on to contend the Tampa Bay Derby and Arkansas Derby. He finished the aforementioned
races in the third and second places respectively.
His pleased trainer, Todd Pletcher said, “Super Saver was my fastest two year old last year and his stakes-record performance in the Jockey Club told me he was a Derby horse.” He went on to say, “I just had to harness that speed and get him ready. Thank
God it happened just that way.”
