Horse Racing: Chepstow officials not certain
The conflicting weather forecast is of great concern for the officials of the Chepstow racecourse. According to the Met Office, the area might be encompassed with a less harsh wind along with some rainfall or there is a possibility of snowfall and some cold
air. The fact that the two forecasts are pretty different, if not poles apart, has caught the attention of the clerk of the racecourse, Keith Ottesen. This has made it difficult for the clerk and his team to decide weather the Coral Welsh meeting that has
been rescheduled to take place on Saturday should be given a go ahead or not, keeping in mind the weather conditions of the area.
Talking to the correspondents about the current weather conditions, Ottesen said that the forecast for the end of this week is not very definite. He revealed that they are expecting two weather models, one being warm and wet, meanwhile the other being frosty
and cold. He further added that the track is under frost covers, but the team does not want snow. Ottesen admitted that the covers could prove helpful in case of frost, he will definitely not want snow to fall of the racecourse.
When a Met Office spokesman was approached for the same reason, he was reported as saying, “It is difficult to be certain at this early stage, but we are forecasting some rain for the Chepstow area on Friday – potentially quite heavy at times. Saturday,
though should be mainly dry with some scattered showers.”
Currently, the going at Chepstow is soft and good to soft in places.
On the other hand, the Sandown clerk of the course, Andrew Cooper is optimistic about the Tolworth Hurdle meeting taking place at the course on Saturday. This is the first time in two years that there is a high possibility of the meeting taking place. According
to the clerk the going on the hurdles course is soft and good to soft in place, meanwhile it is good to soft and soft in places on the chase track today.
Talking to the correspondents, Cooper was reported as saying, “We are due a milder spell midweek and though there have been suggestions of a touch of frost later in the week, we now do not believe that will be a concern. At this stage, it looks as though
covers will not be necessary.”
