Horse Racing: Heavy rain forecast puts the Ayr meeting in doubt
The horse racing calendar this racing season is also being affected by the weather forecast. Towards the end of the last year, almost all the horse racing events in the country were either called off or postponed because of the extreme weather conditions
in the region. The big freeze and several inches of snow, left all the racecourses unfit to host any racing events. On the other hand, when the temperatures rose above the freezing point, the heavy rainfall claimed quite a few scheduled events. Water logging
was just another problem.
It has been revealed that the officials of the Ayr racecourse have called an inspection to discuss the prospects of the meeting because there is a forecast of heavy rainfall in the region. It has been announced that inspection will take place at 7
a.m. on Thursday morning. However, the management is confident that the meeting will get a go ahead since the racecourse can take quite some amount of rainfall.
It is expected that light rain will continue throughout the day on Wednesday, meanwhile heavy rain is forecasted for the night. Under these conditions, the clerk of the course, Emma Marley thought it was necessary to call an early inspection.
Moreover, it has also been reported by the Met Office that Thursday will be a dry day and there will be sunny spells in the region. According to the reports, the temperature in the area will also remain above the freezing point. The going of the track
at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday was described as being soft.
When the clerk of the course was approached by the correspondents to inquire about the prospects of the Ayr meeting and the recently called inspection, she was reported as saying that at the moment, the going is soft and fit for racing, nonetheless,
the weather reports keep on varying and are inconsistent and thus it was decided by the management that an inspection on Thursday morning was inevitable.
She further went in to say that so far there is forecast that there will be heavy rainfall in the area at around 3 a.m. in the morning. Emma added that she is almost certain that the meeting will get a go ahead because the racecourse can take a fair
amount of rain without problems of water logging occurring on the track.
