Horse Racing: Jockey Calvin Borel, Horseman of the Year
The legendary jockey, who has the honour of winning the last four Kentucky Derby events, the most significant meet in American horse racing industry, will be adorned with the Horseman of the Year Award this Saturday. The award, 2010 Warner L. Jones Jr. Horseman
of the Year will be presented to Calvin Borel by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners Inc.
The 44 year old rider clinched the 1000th victory of his riding career at Churchill Downs when he won the 2010 Spring Meet riding title. So far, the talented jockey has ridden winning thoroughbred racehorses in more than 4800 career meets.
Calvin Borel gave a couple of spectacular performances this racing season, especially the one at the Kentucky Derby. He was the rider of the winner Super Saver. The award ceremony will take place during the dinner that will be organized by the KTO at 6 pm
at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Meanwhile, the other contender of the award, Castellano gets a stay for his suspension.
After Jockey Javier Castellano was suspended for six racing days by the Churchill Downs stewards as a result of interference in rival Prince Will I Am’s disqualification from second to 10th place, Jockey was granted a temporary injunction as he stayed off
the suspension at the Franklin Circuit Court this past Tuesday in the Friday Breeder’s Cup Marathon.
Castellano was refused a grant to extend the length of his stay, by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. He wanted his stay to run Thursday through Sunday and Wednesday and Thursday of the week that was going to follow. It has also been revealed by a Jockey’s
Guild that Castellano will be fulfilling a riding commitment in Japan during the stay.
The attorney of the Guild, Mindy Coleman was reported as saying, “As far as we know, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has never denied a jockey a stay pending due process right to an appeal.”
It was observed that the jockey Castellano was very careless while riding the horse. He cut sharply in front of Romp, without giving attention to his actions. This caused the horse to snip heels and trip badly. Borel and Castellano got into an argument after
Borel (who was riding A. U. Miner and was towards the right side of the Romp) kept Martin Garcia from falling due to the injured horse. These actions caused both the jockeys Borel and Castellano to be charged a fine of $5000 and $2500 respectively.
