Horse Racing: Mixed reaction on Royal Wedding’s Fontwell victory
The success of Royal Wedding at the Fontwell track on the eve of Friday, just six hours after the actual royal wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place, has gotten mixed reviews and reactions from those involved in horseracing.
The victory was unexpected considering the fact that the horse had not garnered enough support and bets to be a real threat. Despite that, Royal Wedding’s team especially trainer, Nick Gifford, had remained positive about the performance of the horse during
the 2 mile and 4 furlong race.
It appears that their support and hope paid off when the horse crossed the finish line ahead of its competitors.
A lot of bettors are disappointed and shocked since the horse was only 7-2 for the meeting, while the officials at Fontwell are delighted and are congratulating themselves, after the success of this event.
The general manager for the Fontwell racetrack, Phil Bell declared the victory as “brilliant” and expects the footage of the race to make waves all over the world by morning. He is glad since they held a lot of interest in the race and because the coincidence
of Royal Wedding winning on the day of the royal wedding will bring attention to Fontwell.
On the other hand, Bell and other officials regret not placing any bets on Royal Wedding at the track even though the horse’s owner, Don Tragmar, was optimistic about him even before the race started.
Even with the general lack of bets on Royal Wedding, William Hill claims that they expect a nationwide pay out of seven figures due to the win, which is bound to result in a swell in the Privy Purse according to layers.
Victor Chandler and Ladbrokes were both rather put off since layers on the track were for the horse at “5-1 only a couple of minutes before the off and [we] bet 4-1 during the service at Westminster Abbey thinking it’d return to 2-1”, according to Victor
Chandler’s spokesman while Ladbrokes’s spokesman claimed that fate had been cruel to them and kind to coincidence punters, the royal family fans, and, Royal Wedding backers.
