Horse Racing: Sedgefield calls off Tuesday’s card, Southwell extra meetings announced
The horse racing meeting that was scheduled to take place at Sedgefield, on Tuesday, has been called off because of the freezing weather conditions and snow. This decision was made by the officials of the racecourse, at 9.30 a.m., on Friday. Nonetheless, they had planned an inspection at noon, which never took place and the meeting was abandoned.
The clerk of the racecourse, Charlie Moore, talked to the correspondents about the conditions of the race course. He was reported as saying,
“We applied to the BHA to abandon ahead of schedule because there is clearly no hope. There is between 12 and 14 ½ inches of snow on the course and this morning it was 13C. There is no realistic chance that snow is moving sufficiently and we’d need a day to get ready in any case – there are no hurdles in and we’d need to move the running rail.”
Moore, was indeed very disappointed with the abandonment of Tuesday’s meeting, at Sedgefield. On the other hand, it has been announced that Southwell will be hosting an additional mixed card on Monday, to make up for the lost fixtures, due to the big freeze, snow and extreme weather conditions this week. Three of the additional six, all-weather events, will be run as bumpers, if there is further abandonment of turf races. It has also been announced that not more than two races will be allowed to divide, so that a practical entry would produce an eight-race card, to help offset the damage done to the meeting’s calendar. The deadline for the entries for the extra fixtures has been declared as Friday, noon, 3rd December. Meanwhile the time and date for the final declarations has been set at, 10 a.m. on Sunday, 5th December.
The order for the extra Southwell meeting has also been revealed by the officials, of the racecourse. “The Toteplacepot Win Without Backing A Winner Claiming Stakes” ,will be run over a distance of  one  mile and  four furlongs, and will begin at 12:50 p.m. “Class 5 Your Better Value Forecast Handicap”, will be run over a distance of six  furlongs at 1:20 p.m. At 1:50 p.m., the one mile, Three Ways to Win Handicap Stakes will kick off. Additionally, A Better Way To Bet “Junior” Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, will begin at 2:20 p.m.
