Horse Racing: Silk Drum lands Red Rum Handicap
It was a very good day indeed for the fans of the sport and all those involved in the horse business because the much awaited and much flaunted John Smith’s Grand National event started off at the Aintree racecourse.
The fans and sports critics were provided with a great deal of quality racing on Thursday. The Grade III event was claimed by the champion race horse Silk Drum.
Aintree racecourse hosted the Matalan.co.uk Red Rum Handicap Chase. The Grade III was run over 2 miles on turf surface and was open to racehorses of age five and above.
The winning colt was ridden by talented jockey, Paul Gallagher. The colt did not find it very hard to hold off the field of competitors in this event as he dominated the race at the Aintree racecourse. The champion was sent out to contend the event as a 9-1 favourite for the event and he started off from the ninth fence to claim the race.
The winner of the Grand Annual Chase Oiseau De Nuit was the runner up in this event. He was sent out to contend the race as a 8-1 favourite under the jockey Stephen Clements. The racehorse could not manage to finish the race in the first spot as he was unable to jump over the second fence very efficiently.
Meanwhile, the racehorse, who was the 10-1 favourite with the sponsors, Delilah, only managed to finish the race in third place.
The winning jockey was very pleased and satisfied after his mount claimed the race, which was a feature of the prestigious Grand National meeting at the Aintree racecourse.
In a post race interview, the jubilant Gallagher was reported as saying, “To ride a winner on my first ride at Aintree is unbelievable, I’m having to pinch myself. I was hopeful that he’d run well but I didn’t think he’s win as easily as he did. He was well out of the handicap as well”.
On the other hand, the Liverpool Hurdle was claimed by the champion Big Buck’s for the third time at Aintree.
