Horse Racing: Tranquil Sea claims the John Durkan
One of the most awaited horse racing events, the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Steepchase event was claimed by the talented racehorse Tranquil Sea. This Grade I event that was run over a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs was the colt’s first major victory
over the fences.
The Fairyhouse meeting today featured the elegant eight years old who was sent off as a 5-2 second favourite. He stole the show with his splendid performance in the event under the jockey Andrew McNamara. His jumps were perfectly up to the mark, as Tranquil
Sea was able to hold off the pace setter J’y Vole by a distance of 3/4th of a length.
The third place was clinched by the colt Roberto Goldback, meanwhile the 9-4 favourite horse Colldine could not give an impressing performance after he gave a Grade I treble to trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Towend, at Fairyhouse.
The winner of this meeting, Tranquil Sea also includes a win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup that took place at Cheltenham in the last racing season to when he could make placed finishes at the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals.
On the other hand, the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle was claimed by the enthusiastic four year old colt Zaidpour. He started from the back of the field of six runners under the jockey Paul Towend, and won the event in indeed a very impressive style.
The only time when the racehorse got a little confused was the second last part of the meeting, but was otherwise very consistent throughout the race. His performance in this meeting did really bring thrill his fans and the connections of his rivals.
His trainer Willie Mullins was rather hesitant to reveal the colt’s next appearance, however he did mention that Zaidpour would be heading for the Leopardstown Grade I event.
Talking to the correspondents the trainer Willie Mullins was reported as saying, “I’m very happy with that. He was a bit novicey at first but once he settled he jumped well. We’ll look at the PaddyPower.com Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown
on December 27 and probably go there for the experience.”
The trainer further added, “He has bought in France and we think we’ve got a bargin. He got a bad cut last season, that’s why we waited until last moth to start him off.”
