Horse Racing Update: Oscars Well takes over Grade I Novice Field
The Navan Novice Field that took place today was contended by some of the most talented hurdlers of age four and above over a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs. Oscars Well went on to give a spectacular performance over the hurdles as he won the Grade I
event which has recently been claimed by Shinrock Paddy, Mikael D’Haguenet, Trafford Lad and Aran Concerto.
The talented colt, Oscars Well was beaten by just half a length in his hurdling debut. Nonetheless in this particular meeting he won the hearts of his fans by his splendid victory that he clinched by a distance of nine lengths. The way he held off the runner
up Sweet Shock, showed his dominance in the sport. The colt was sent out as a 9-4 favourite. The 7-4 favourite hurdler Fully Funded was the third place finisher, 11 lengths behind the runner up.
Oscars Well’s running style in this meeting was similar to that in the St Moritz. He maintained a moderate pace throughout the event and still managed to hold off the field and finish the race in the first spot, starting from the fourth.
As he turned for home, the runner up Sweet Shock gave a tough time to all his rivals including Oscars Well and his rider. According to the sports analysts, he seemed to be clearly winning the event at that point.
The runner up, Sweet Shock could have managed a slightly higher jump, but he could not maintain balance and lost both the ground and momentum at his hurdles, meanwhile Oscars Well dominantly pulled off a high jump without urging his rivals. As Jessica Harrington-trained
son of Oscar jumped beautifully, his runner up’s rider could not make his mount jump into the lead.
In a post race interview, the trainer of the winner was reported as saying, “I know the favourite came out, but he couldn’t have done it better and Robbie says he hated the tacky ground. He is stepping up well and he will go for a two and a half mile Grade
II at Leopards town towards the end of January.”
She added, “He’ll have a penalty to carry for this, but if he is good enough he should be up to it.”
On the other hand, Lingfield’s Saturday card was cancelled due to heavy snow fall in the area.
