Horse Racing: Whinstone Boy ready to defend Thyestes Chase crown
Whinstone Boy is set to defend his title at the Thyestes Chase event for the second time at Gowran Park on Thursday. The champion racehorse claimed the Thyestes Chase crown 12 months ago and will be targeting it this racing season
as well.
Whinstone Boy is a ten-year-old racehorse whose odds for last year’s edition of the event were cut down to 5-1 from 12-1. Currently, his best price 14-1 is being given with Paddy Power. It has also been reported that the champion
trainer Willie Mullins trainee’s odds were cut down by Paddy Power (4-1 from 5). Pomme Tiepy is trained by the famed trainer Mullins.
Currently, Whinstone Boy trains under the supervision of the talented trainer Jimmy Mangan. Jimmy is well known for saddling his victorious trainee in the Grand National event. Moreover, he also sent out Whinstone Boy to contend
at the prestigious conditions chase meeting that took place at Tramore. The racehorse gave an impressive performance and managed to finish the race in third place behind the runner up Barker. The race was run over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
When asked as to who would be riding Whinstone Boy for the Thyestes Chase this time, he said that the colt is doing fine and will be ridden by the jockey Sean Flanagan. He added that Flanagan rode Whinstone Boy to victory at the
event last year and hopes that he will repeat the feat this season.
Meanwhile, as rainfall is causing troubles for the management of the racecourse, the course manager of the Gowran Park, Margaret Fogarty also had his concerns. He said, “We had 27 mm of rain on Friday and Saturday night but not
as much as anticipated last night and we changed the going to heavy this morning but the forecast is dry weather for the rest of the week.”
In addition, another meeting that is on the verge of being called off due to the heavy rain is the one at Plumpton. The final decision regarding the meeting will be announced after the 8.30 a.m. inspection today.
