Horse Racing in Woodbine, Canada Part I
The first race that took place on the 19th of September in Woodbine was the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes in Woodbine. It is a Grade I race run over a distance of 1 metre and on a turf race track. The race horse trained by Barry Hills was the colt
that emerged to be victorious in the race. Redwood ran under the jockey Michael Hills. Those who witnessed the race and saw Redwood take over the field describe the horse’s performance as brilliant.
The contest had purse money of 750,000 Canadian dollars. Redwood was sent out to contend the race at 19-10. The horse is owned by Khalid Abdullah, the race horse held off all the other eight competitors of the race. In the beginning of the race, Redwood
occupied the fifth spot on the track, but it did not take him long to run at a faster pace than the horses Fifty Proof and the winner of the Northern Dancer last year, Marsh Side.
Redwood covered a few lengths in the beginning of the race and then was seen to take over the field very smoothly and run past the leaders of the race. The jockey Michael Hills also looked very satisfied during the race. He rode Redwood very comfortably
even when he was running at a very fast speed.
One of the most interesting scenes that was witnessed at the race track that day was how Fifty Proof ran a couple of lengths ahead of Redwood, but moved aside, leaving a passage for Redwood to take over the field. Redwood’s performance in the race was very
dedicated and determined. The way the race horse maintained its pace and running fashion was just simply remarkable. Fifty Proof finished in the second spot by just half a length behind the winner Redwood. As for Redwood, the victory was a very comfortable
and easy one. Fifty Proof, however, maintained his place ahead of Windward Islands throughout the race. Redwood was the runner-up to the winner in the Grand Prix de Deauville, so his jockey Michael Hills was very confident that Redwood would top the race.
Redwood also had a lucrative success at the Grade III Stakes that took place at Glorious Goodwood.
Talking to the correspondents after the race concluded, the jockey Michael said that he was told that there was a new patch at the race track, but when he actually got to the trail he found it to be lovely. Yes, that is what Michael called the race track.
This is probably one of the reasons why the rider, and his horse were seen to run very comfortably on the track. Michael also shared his experience on the track by saying that the horse ran straight into the track and aced the race in a remarkable manner.
He added that the passage taken on by the race horse was just the perfect one.
Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, revealed that the race horse will be contending the Canadian International in Woodbine or the Breeder’s Cup Classic. The former race is scheduled to take place on the 16th of October, while the
latter will take place in November.
Teddy said, speaking on ATR, that the final decision is completely up to the owner Prince Khalid whether the horse will contend the Canadian International and return to Woodbine again or the Breeder’s Cup Classic. He also added that the race horse’s victory
at the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes has opened many options for Redwood to compete in. Moreover, he said that despite the colt’s victory he was not that satisfied with Redwood’s timings in the race and that needs improvement. Teddy further said that the only
thing that got him worried during the race was whether Redwood would get through it or not.
Teddy also told the correspondents that Redwood’s trainer Barry has always shown a lot of dedication when he works with him. He added that Redwood’s run in the Grand Prix de Deauville can be called soft, but his performance in this race was as solid as cast
iron.
