Horse Racing: local couple will be sending their horses to the Breeders
The American population in general, and the fans of the sport in particular, anticipate the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic more than any event that takes place in the American horse racing industry.
After the Kentucky Derby that took place in May, the Breeders’ Cup Classic is scheduled to take place on the 5th and 6th of November in Churchill Downs this year. A local couple, Mr and Mrs Ike Thrash of Hattiesburg said, “To people
in the horse business, to win the Kentucky Derby is best, but a close second is to win a Breeders Cup race. It is supposed to be the championship.”
Having good knowledge about the event, Ike Thrash and his wife Dawn will be sending out their two racehorses, Tell A Kelly and Hurricane Ike, to participate in the $ 5 million event at Churchill Downs. The former colt will be running in the Breeders Cup
Juvenile Fillies race while the latter will be contending in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile on Saturday.
The couple also had their thoroughbred Line of David run in the Kentucky Derby, earlier this year. When Thrash was asked to compare the two significant events, he said, “The Classic is like the national championship is college football. The other races are
like the Rose or Fiesta Bowl.” He further said, “The purses on some races in the Breeders Cup are bigger than the Kentucky Derby. The Breeders Cup Classic has a $ 5 million race. The Derby is $ 2 million, and the owners put up half of that.”
Both of Thrash’s horses will be ridden by the famed jockey Calvin Borel. The jockey has the honour of riding three of the four Kentucky Derby champions. Thrash is more than pleased that his colts will be running under the talented jockey as he said, “I love
Calvin to ride at Churchill because he is so great there. Talk about home field advantage: Calvin wins 8 or 9 percent of the time everywhere else, but 30 percent of the time at Churchill Downs.”
About the couple’s two horses, Hurricane Ike is a two year old colt who had many ups and downs this racing season. As for Tell A Kelly, she has to her credit list the victory in the prestigious Darley Debutante at Hollywood Park in California.
