Question:

Horse Show Nerves: Nutrition?

Before horse shows, I get nervous. I get so nervous that I don't really eat. I'm not very nervous in the early morning so I can eat but we're usually in a hurry so I only have a cookie or something.

Before my classes, I can't eat because my stomach is filled with butterflies because I'm so nervous. By the end of the day I end up having like one bottle of Gatorade, a cookie and frozen lemonade.

I end up being dehydrated and I don't eat enough food.

How can I over-come this?

  1. I always have trouble eating at horse shows for the same reason. I like to take some drinkable yogurt. It is quick and easy. It's not hard to digest. It has a lot of protein for energy and doesn't spike your blood sugar like cookies or Gatorade which will make show nerves worse. Also, try drinking water in addition to Gatorade which a lot of sugar.

  2. honesly the best thing to do is get out in the ring about half an hour to 45 minutes before ur first class cause usually u will be SO bored u will be ok.

actually the best to do is eat like a banana or something at least honeslty it helps.

i am SO nervouse at shows it aint funny i have cried sometimes. i chickened out on the best pony in the world. so quiet but chickened out still. and eating helps. hopefully we both will get over our fears and be the best show people EVER lol. cya

  3. Your symptoms are normal for someone who shows horses.  Only way to get over it is to keep showing.

  4. First, let me say - IT'S NORMAL!!!  I've been showing for 20 years and to this day, I still don't eat while at a horse show.

If you absolutely need to change it due to health reasons - just plan ahead.  A lot of people I show with, make healthy snacks to bring along.  They'll bake muffins the night before to eat in the morning in the truck.

Plan for quick snack foods - and have your mom/helpers bring the food to you to eat.  Have someone on "force feeding/drinking duty."  Even if you can only eat a bite or two here and there - it's still better than nothing!

    Best wishes!
