Question:

Horse Training Troubles?

I have been riding and working with horses for quite some time, and I have never had a problem with a horse like I do my current one. She was trained for level 1 dressage, and they trot all the time, well I have had her for around a month or so, and have tried sitting deep in the saddle, giving her her face, getting her collected, circles, patterns, and the whole nine yards, even lunging, she will not stop trotting, and she throws a fit when anyone has tried to get her to walk. She pivots, side passes, and backs you into fences, is there anything else that I can try to get her listening, I don't want to trot all the time, we like to walk. She is such a nice horse, I am hoping someone may have some advice on what I can do to help her slow down. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I am not sure if you are an all natural type of horseman, but if you aren't then you should get after her for it. Simply don't let her do it. If she does do it give her a crack with your reins and make her stop for example, try to walk, if she doesn't pull back hard and say "whoa" loud. Let her know you are the boss and you get to decide when you want to trot. Then ask her to walk on from the stop. If she trots pull her back say "whoa" and make her stop again. Then walk, and again, it needs to be constant repetition. Some things to be careful about are rearing, etc. But just remember repetition. If she walks for you pat her and tell her good girl, then move on to something else, or quit on a good note. She will get it eventually.

  2. I know this is boring to do, but have you tried walk, woe. Walk woe, over and over and over again with your horse saddled and you walking beside-giving the commands on the ground. [halter over bitted bridle, with a lead rope.] or just with a lead rope and bridle.

She could also have pain somewhere, which as I'm sure you know, makes horses go into flight mode.

    Best wishes. Cindy
