  1. their teeth i have heard every  6 months

we worm our horses every spring and fall i think it would affect them if you over worm so i wouldnt try it

we give our horses grain twice a day morning and night

and right now  our horses dont get hay but when we do feed our horses hay in the late fall and winter and early spring  they have hay in there pasture and at nights

  2. While the magazines and some books will say "yearly" for floating teeth, my vet (who does my floating) feels it's best to wait until you have a problem or every other year at the most.

His reasoning is that the tooth they have is "all they will ever have" and rasping them down yearly wears them down too soon.  If my horse has a problem digesting, I first try a feed change.  And I'm not so sure the old "oats" is the best way to feed.  As I've aged, I've found I cannot digest seeds and I'm wondering if thats also the case with horses.  I try the feeds such as Purina Senior, Dumor Equistages, Omelene, etc.  Feeds that don't take a lot of chewing for the horse to get all the nutritional value.

You need to worm a horse on a bimonthly basis and rotate the type of wormer used to avoid building up a resistance.  Many people do a seasonal rotation and others use a daily feed through.  I use the bimonthly and adjust for the different type of worms at different times of year.

Horses have approximately 100' of intestine, that's alot!  They are much better off on pasture all day if you can do that.

But most people cannot and feed according to their schedule.

I feed four times a day: hay & grain in the morning, hay at noon,  hay & grain in the evening, and an extra supply of hay at night, plus water all the time.  Smaller feedings spread throughout the day are easier on the digestive system and keep everything moving along smoothly.

  3. Teeth- usually once a year.  But depends on if your horse has dental problems or not.  more often if they do have dental issues.

worming- normally done 6-8 weeks.  you want to rotate wormers as well to ensure youre protecting your horse from all types of worms since there is not one wormer that can do it all.  but there is also a daily wormer that you can feed in case you dont want to worry about remembering every 6-8 weeks.  Yes it can be bad to over worm.

Feeding- horses are designed to graze all day.  ideally they should have roughage (hay) available 24/7.  But if you have to break it down to meals, 3 is better then 2.  You never want to give them more then 5 pounds of concentrates (grains and feeds) at a time for an average size horse.

  4. 1. once every year.

    2. You should also worm a horse once a year. And yes it is bad if you over worm them. So keep track on when you do do it.

    3. depends on how much grass they have. If they have fields of high grass then not at all. But if its short grass that you know your horse cant live of of. Then a bail a day. Grain isnt really needed. but a cup of grain will be fine.

  5. how often does a horse need to have their teeth floated?

Depends on the horse, usually no more than every 6 months- a year.

how often do you have to worm a horse? = Every 3 months

and does it affect the horse in a bad way if you over-worm?= Yes

how many tmies a day should you grain and hay a horse? 2 times? 3 times?= again depends on the horse, some horses dont need grain at all some need alot of it. I usualy feed hay once in the morning and once at night.

  6. ours haven't had their teeth floated in years and they are fine, although i believe they are supposed to be done yearly. but hey, mustangs don't get dental care :)

worming should be done about every 8 weeks.

there's really no guidelines for when a horse needs grain. Just take the ammount you give daily and try to split it up several times a day, but at the same time each day. but twice is good, 3 or more if possible.

And hay/grass should be given all the time.
