  1. my friends horse does this too but, does she do this all the time? if so, horses can get asthma just like humans.  if she does have asthma, you may have to give her asthma shots regularly.

  2. Try watering his hay and if that doesn't work, then call the vet! =]

  3. there are several things to be taken into account when it comes to coughing. there's always the chance of heaves [asthma, in horse form], which is obviously the worst of several problems which could be occuring. It could be from the dust, or even more it could just be allergies. some horses have really nasty allergies that can cause coughing, skin irritations, hair loss, etc. these are only a few symptoms, and not all of them show at once. if it's allergies, a simple 10cc shot of dextramethazone will do wonders, just ask your vet. there's also the chance that it could be a simple respiratory infection, or even a common cold. if the coughing persists over the next several days, or worsens, and you see more unusual behavior, call your vet. she/he will gladly help you figure out what's wrong with your horse =]

  4. When he is trotting and cantering, he needs to intake more air, so he is clearing out his lungs, most horse do this when first ridden, after being stalled all night...now, if he has just started this, then something in his stall is causing him to gather up that mucous in his lungs...bedding, hay, dust, etc....anything that you can water down, do it...it will help tremendously...be sure and take his temp to determine is there is an infection present, otherwise, the watering down of the stall, overhead rafters, hay, bedding, etc.  You don't have to make a mud hole of his stall, just lightly spray it when it is empty.  If you don't get some drastic results from this soon, I would call your vet.

  5. he probly has a cold my horses cough when they have a cold it could also be from somthing in there esofhigess

  6. well maybe the dust in the arena is getting in to his lungs this is what happend to my friends horse. Maybe have the stable owner water the arena so the dust isnt so bad. i hope this helps and good luck :)

  7. I'm not sure what it may be but you should try some pine oil!!

    he res the mixture:

    2 drops of pine oil

2 drops of tea tree oil

2 drops of peppermint oil added to 10mls of sweet almond oil

massage it into his outer nostrils, the sides of his face and lower jaw for a week.

    it really helps!!

Make sure you use this along with the medicine or advice your vet suggests!!

    i hope i could help!!

  8. he may be getting a virus, he may be wormy, his hay may be dusty. These are a few possibilites. If it persists, you should check in with his vet and let him know what's going on.

  9. Is the hay you are feeding him dusty? If so wet or soak it.

Also this sounds silly, but a horse we have had for 12 years gets a cough and runny nose at this time every year, and so it has been confirmed as hay fever, the vet advised Ventipulman. I also once had a horse out on loan, it got a really bad cough, it turned out they hadn't been taking all the wee out when mucking out, and the strong ammonia had given her a bad cough and asthma. So make sure you muck out well, and don't have a deep litter bedding.

Also if he is coughing lots in trot and canter, maybe give him a rest, as this will make him worse. Also if he is stabled at night, if the weather is good, leave him out at night, as horses with respiratory problems get better faster when they live out, as the ventilation is better.

  10. Probably a respiratory inflammation. Their body produces excessive amounts of mucus and the only way to get rid of it is by coughing.

Best to go to a vet and grab and antibiotics.

  11. Try Nageeze.
