Horse euthanasia/cremation ?

I have to euthanize my 4 yr old pony due to failed suspensory ligaments which are becoming painful to him.

Please dont tell me that it is cruel or not to do it. I dont want to but im doing it for the well being of him.

He's located in Ashland Nebraska and i am trying to find a place that will pick him up and cremate him when he's gone.

Can anyone help me find a place that will do horse cremations in my area? Also any helpful information on euthanasia would be great

  1. Your vet would be the best to ask, they should have a list for your area.

    Take care

  2. You should ask your vet - they should know about these services. I live in Florida, and the nearest crematory for horses is about 200 miles away, but they come pick the horse up and everything, then ship a portion of the ashes back to you. We unfortunately just lost a horse to founder on Monday and he's been picked up for cremation. It's a very hard thing to do, but you are relieving your pony of horrible pain, so it's a very humane and kind choice. I'll try a search and see if I can come up with anything in your area, but your best bet is to ask your vet. I'm sorry for your loss :(

  3. I don't know specifically in your area, but in general your best bet is university with a vet school. You can also try a very large animal clinic. Do you have any of those nearby?

  4. You are doing the right thing. But you probably need to ask a vet in your area, but be ready to pay 500-1200 dollars to get him cremated. Sorry for your loss. ;(

  5. Have to agree with the other two respondants as when I lost a mare two year ago my vet was how I found out what to do.

I'm in Texas and the place I used was there within about an hour and was very kind and understanding.  I did not do cremation, but rather a burial in a pet cemetary with a marker...but that was just my personal choice.

And I don't think anyone should think you are cruel for your decision.  If your pony is in chronic pain and can't resume a good quality of life than what you are doing is what is probably best for him.  If you are comfortable with your decision than DO NOT let anyone tell you otherwise.
