  1. the best thing i do all year long is lounge them. all u need is ur horse and maybe a whip or lead rope. Your horse will figure out really soon that you are the only one he can trust with him so he will trust you tons more which will better bond u and ur horse. if u don't know what lounging is, its when you and your horse are in a roundpen and you  make thehorse walk trot and canter circles around you. when you stop, say WHOAH really low and loud and your horse should stop and look at you.

  2. try something called a t-touch, it works with most animals.

its a special massage thing that relaxes the horse, and it bonds you well.

you put you're hand on the horse's body, and kind of anchor your thumb in one place. with your fingers together, push the skin in 1 and a quarter circles, then move your hand to a different place and just keep repeating the same thing. i hope that makes sense!

or you can groom your horse or lunge it, or just spend time in its stable making a fuss of it.

  3. If your horse really doesn't trust you, start slow, such as sitting in a lawn chair, reading, outside. it's stall or paddock, where it can see you, move closer and closer over each day. Then, try to go inside it;s paddock, BUT DON"T CATCH OR HALTER YOUR HORSE. Let it know that you arn't giong to always work it really hard every time he sees you. Brush it inside the paddock. Soon your horse will be following you around. Then you can slowy advance to stuff like lunging and riding.

If you are just looking for something fun to do, I would suggest a join up. Look it up on the internet! It's really fun.

  4. Bareback riding, join up, trail riding, games, swimming

  5. T-touch is wonderful! It will only support whatever else you do, riding or not!

You might also start playing Parelli games. The Parelli system is a great structure to build trust and friendship while engaging your horse's mind. There are so many people teaching it now, it shouldn't be too hard to find someone to consult with, to help you get started on the right foot if it interests you. John Lyons also has some good exercises...it just depends on which method appeals to you. All of this, like the t-touch, will translate into more connected riding for you both, too!

Play and have fun! Lots of lunging can get very boring, and it can get hard on your horse's body. Keep things as fresh as you can by being friends with him and do what's fun for you both!

  6. Go swimming! =)

  7. I used to just chill in the field or the stall with my horses. They enjoyed just having me around. I would brush them, scratch them, etc..
