Im getting a horse in a few months and im trying to get a rough feed plan so i can estimate upkeep costs.

Ill probably get a 15.3-16.3 mare or gelding. Possibly a TB

Ill ride for around an hour 5-6 days per week

The horse will be stabled at night and our grazing during the day.

How does this look for the above feed plan.

Morning- 1.5kg Lucerne, 1.5kg pasture hay, 500g barastoc cool command, 500g Econimix, 1kg wheaten chaff, 500g Lucerne Chaff, 10g Cell-Vital.

Night- 2.5kg pasture, 2.5kg lucerne, 500g barastoc cool command, 500g Econimix, 1kg wheaten chaff, 500g Lucerne Chaff, 10g Cell-Vital.

  1. geez!  A horse is a horse! No matter what you have!  Weather its a horse "Off The Track"  (That means it didnt make anybody any money) or a trail horse, feed the best, stay away from the discount store stuff, that means wormer, feed, fly spray, e.t.c.   When did so many horse owners become self proclamed experts in nutrition?

  2. r u sure u can stick 2 tht plan?

  3. If the horse has free range grazing of good grass all day long, that is probably enough. You can give them a scoop of sweet feed morning and night if you want to, to keep them looking sleek and to help keep them from getting to bony.

  4. ummm....WOW. I dont think I have ever seen a feed plan that complex. Anyway the only thing I would like to see is free range hay/pasture grass. Most TBs that I know (including mine) like having access to something to eat all the time even if they dont eat it. Jazz throws a fit if he finds himself in a stall without hay. But thats a person choice. He probably doesnt need the extra hay to be healthy. The rest of it looks pretty good though.

  5. most thoroughbreds have a hard time keeping weight on. it TOTALLY depends on where you live. some places grass is better, some places they need supplements in there diet to keep them healthy. I ahve no idea what mmost of those things you talked about are lol are they supplements or food? I feel so dumb asking hehe but if the horse is healthy when you buy it feed it the same thing the original owners did. Umm...it is really hard to say cause some horses might to well on that diet and some might not IT DEPDNS ON THE HORSE! I would ask your trainer, vet, or a knowledgeable(sp?) horse person.

    GOOD LUCK

  6. when feeding horses there are a lot of variables.

    looking at    feed   { you are over feeding}

when you get your horse  foreward  photo  and I will be glad to help you    don

  7. well i have a TB in the ACT and i feed him 2kg of ponys choice chaff which has lucerne chaff, oaten chaff and molasses in it. you should find out what the other owner fed the horse. and dont change the diet of the horse suddenly. but as your horse will be stabled i recomend you feed him the pasture hay.

as i know you live in Canberra from your other question i would like to recommend a cheap food suplier who is myne as well and if you get over 4 things then you will get free delivery.

    his web site is: www.thechaffman.com.au

his web site has a huge list of foods. he has most of the ones you have listed.

his phone number is 6287 3993

    and mobile 0400491684.

he has great quality feed at a cheap price. i have found he is one of the cheapest around.

i hope i helped some what.
