  1. Wow, check the hay? Mold? Is the stalls/paddocks these horses are in sandy - could there be a sand blockage?

  2. the two horses that coliked there intstine probably twisted and the other horse was consipated

  3. At some lesson barns kids do not cool their horses out propery and they may just feed them right away.  This can cause colic.  That is strange a horse died from gas colic.  Usually gas colic is not as severe as sand or impaction.  If a horse is showing symptoms of gas colic usually walking them and letting them take small nibbles on grass and not letting them lie down cures it, also banimine from your vet helps.  Parasites/worms can also be a cause of colic, maybe with so many deadly colic cases your barn should review its de-worming schedule and make sure the horses are being fully protected.  Finally, if there is not much grass and horses were eating at buttercups, those can be poisonus is eaten in large amounts to horses, with poor grazing areas paraisites are more common as well as horeses eating plants that they usually would not.  Putting hay (flakes or round bales) out in pastures that are not very lush helps.  Im sorry about the loss at your barn!  Hope this helps.  Good Luck in the future, hope this doesnt happen to you again! :-)

  4. I have heard of alfalfa doing this to a horse before that was not cooled enough before feeding.  If you are not feeding pellets or something of the sort it may not hurt to have the protien tested in the hay or grass that the horses are eating.  If you are worried then maybe move your horse.  It would be a shame to loose it.

    Good luck

  5. maybe the horses are eating freshly mowed grass      write back and tel me wht you think about that answer Please and thank you

  6. At lesson barns, some students don't cool out there horses before giving them food and water. A likely cause. It could also be caused by the hay quality or bad grain. Talk to the barn owner.

  7. Sounds like it could have been a bad batch of hay for that time frame. It could also have been because of a dry spell, meaning the horses could have been ingesting more dirt and sand than usual with their grass consumption, and possibly hay if they are fed it on the ground.

Or it could have just been bad coincidence. I would keep an eye out, though, because I don't know how often and closely the horses are looked at. If it's a huge barn, the signs of colic could have easily been overlooked by staff, so the cases weren't caught early enough to save the horses.

  8. Not enough information.  Could be the feed If all fed the same feed.  It could be the Hay.  Too many different reason and not enough info.
