I am thinking about buying a horse, it is getting vetted today. It has herpes in one of its eyes, which the vet is not worried about, but i would like to know more information on it. Can anyone tell me about it and what it causes and so on?

Thanks.

why is GCG here in Horses??? Is Kevin not big enough??

  4. My horse had the same thing happen to her about a year ago. The vet come out, gave her antibiotics and she was just fine. Don't worry about it. It will clear up.

  5. thats hilarious

  6. Equine herpes viruses are just like those that affect humans.  Once infected, they lie dormant until stress, illness, or other factor suppresses the immune function so that the virus can begin to multiply again (reactivate).  Like cold sores in humans (herpes simplex virus type I) for example.  They are called cold sores because when you get a cold, and your immune defenses are down, the virus activates and produces the sore.   You get better and the sore goes away and the virus "goes back to sleep" until it's next chance comes along.

  7. Galloppal is right.

You other guys - is this an invasion ? - Does Buk know ?

  8. a horse that i used to lease had the same thing, and we gave him a vet-appointed eye ointment that calmed it down a little... remember it can be pretty painful for the horse if it spreads, but its not a dangerous thing, like the vet said. the cause is just that the horse got a herpes virus, probably from another horse since its contagious

  9. It's nothing.  Put a saddle on him and ride him hard.

  10. Honestly, I'd be prone to not buy the horse....Herpes is a recurrent virus and if it's located in this horse's eye it can be very painful for him if it is in a "breakout" episode in his eye.
