  1. It all depends on where you live and the climate. I live in the Northwest of the US on the coast where the weather is cool and mild year round.  It is common for horses to live outside full time with merely a canopy of trees or a roof for shelter during the harshest weather here.  Most times the horses don't even bother with going under the roof and don't seem to mind the rain.

We would just throw out the hay in the field when supplementing and feeding grain is no big deal at all since you don't want to over feed grain.  They come running at the sight of a bucket.  Eating grain right out of your hand will do.  Make sure that there is always fresh water available. We keep out salt licks too.  I just can't see keeping a horse cooped up in a stable when they could be out roaming, romping and rolling.  Horses get BORED easily.  A bored horse can be destructive, tempermental or neurotic.  You need enough acreage so that they will not turn the land into a mud hole too. Horses eat grass far closer to the ground than cattle do.  A "horse acre", as the real estate agents call it, IS NOT enough to keep a horse. Around here we have laws about how much acreage you must have per head. If you don't meet the criteria, your horse gets taken away.  Check your local laws.  IMHO 5 acres is marginal but, personally, I wouldn't consider less than 10 acres for a healthy happy horse.
