Question:

Horse photograph - shall I enter or not?

There's a photography class in a show near me and I'm thinking of entering. I've never done this before and I know my pictures aren't great or anything! Anyway, I took this photo at Appleby Fair (a gypsy horse trading fair in the UK) and I really like it - http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ah6K6ET4gyeGNEZSRLNkBc71Bwx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080715063443AA5pdKq

  1. Clop, Clop-that means yes I think.

  2. If they mark you down for the nature of the photograph, then they're crappy judges. This is a quality photograph. You can't shy away from the raw nature of the fair; don't you know this is exactly what a good judge is looking for? They don't want some picture-perfect little pony in its picture-perfect field. They want a picture that makes you feel something and understand something - and this is a great picture for that!

  3. sure if he/she can handle  it

  4. The horses look good but there are to many people in the background.

  5. Give it a go, it'll certainly provoke a reaction. It might make some people feel uncomfortable but a lot of great photographs have done that - think of photos of the Ethiopian famine, the Vietnam War etc

  6. Content-wise I would consider it ok.  My main concern about entering this photo in a contest is the point of the focus is about at the horse's girth leaving the head a little fuzzy.  I would have like to have seen the head a little sharper.

  7. I would enter that pic with a title of TROT ON!.. its the essence of a trotting horse, and there is noting wrong with the look of concentration on the drivers face.  Hes a young kid, and likely its his first time driving...

also for those of you who didnt know.  The horse HAS to have his head like that.  They wear overchecks and you can see the buckle of his on his crest..

  8. Honestly, i think the picture looks a little cruel and its not very comforting. The horse dosen't look very comfortable and neither do the other people in the scene. I would try for another picture or just not ener at all.

  9. the laughing or sleeping horse

  10. Midnight, I just hate the way those guys race up and down on a hard surface without any thought of the horses feet and legs. I know they are just trotting but it is fast and constant.

    Sorry.

As far as a photo for a competition I think you could crop to peoples expressions or the drivers body and face as individual photos. Unfortunately the horses eye and muzzle is a little out of focus or I would crop somewhere there too to have the eyes and nostrils flaring. The line of people on left would make an interesting subject.

  11. Naaay!

  12. I wouldnt enter it. because of the people in the back and the kids face. it looks like they are beating the horse to go so no.

  13. i don't like the position the horse is in- high head, wild eyes, ears back, mouth gaped... but the quality is crisp and clear. i think you should enter them. enter your other pix, especially the first dog one!!!

  14. I believe you should go with your gut instinct. With me, I would enter, just worth the try. But then again, you may have strict judges that look at the picture closely, like me. I saw a cut on the horse where they coat/skin has ripped open, and the people in the background seem as if they are tired or terrified. And they boy riding the wagon looks as if he is beating the horse. Also, the horse looks like it doesn't feel comfortable. But it's what ever you'd like to do. Go for it, or just take a different picture.  And if you entered, you shouldn't get marked down for the nature of the photo.

    I believe these will win:

  15. I like your pix! It is worth a try!

  16. yeah!

  17. Go for it!

    [Edit]

Sorry.  Thought you said pornography class.

  18. I'm not a photography critic, but I think it's only a mediocre photo--a snapshot.

Without the horse's legs, you don't really have much sense of motion, which would really enhance the photo a lot and capture more of that "raw nature" of the fair.

Sometimes the best photos are those that *expose* cruelty, so I don't think that should be an issue. I just don't think it's a great photo for a contest.

  19. no - they not that good

  20. they are ok, but you need a faster shutter speed for action shots as some are blurred

  21. "Neigh "

  22. The picture dosen't look good it is foggy and the horse looks like it is scared. I believe it is on the line or animal crulety. So don't enter it.....it don't look very professional and you will propably get laughed at.

But i would totaly go for these ones

  23. go for it

  24. i like the concept, but the quality is very poor... i suggest you fix them up; for example, your photo is a bit foggy...
