Question:

Horse question?

I have 3 horses and they are all vaccinated for rabies and the west nile virus.The last couple of days i have been finding dead birds around my house and i think that they have the west nile virus(i am not sure though)is there any chance of my horses getting the virus?Thanks!

  2. well, if your horses are vaccinated for the west nile virus then there is no way for your horses to get the virus.but just in case, keep your eye out for your horses to be acting different, if they do, call the vet.

  3. First, you need to contact someone about these birds you are finding.  They will need to run tests to determine if indeed you are in the middle of a West Nile outbreak.

    Second, yes, your horse CAN still contract the virus, but being vaccinated will help to control it.  Vaccines do not prevent anything, they just help to ensure animals (or humans) build up antibodies in their immunity system to help fight the foreigh bodies attacking their system.  

    Without the vaccine, severe illness or death is more than likely.  But with vaccinations, there is a stronger chance that the animal can fight it and survive.
