Question:

Horse races?

I have to go to the horse races this afternoon with my mother in law (it's perhaps her favorite thing to do) and I am the exact opposite of excited. First of all, she's already told me most people go for two things- to bet and drink- two things I won't be old enough for until may, and that they will literally run over you going from the wall to the window (did I mention we are bringing my 16 month old?) I hate being around drunks, I get enough of that from my dads family, and I jut hate the idea of horse races in general... I really don't want to be trampeld by a bunch of drunks watching such intelligent creatures run in circles for money.

All that being said, I don't want to be bitter and I want to TRY to have a good time. It took us a long time to get on good terms with one another so I want to at least try this since she's so interested. How can I enjoy myself, with the baby, when I feel this way... and would much rather go to the museum literally JUST down the road, or the play we were supposed to see three weekends in a row and now don't get to go to at all because we are doing this instead? (Sorry, a bit bitter about that one. Trying not to be, but am)

  1. go to the park area of the racetrack you might find families there. I know thats the case at Delaware. O yeah and your mother should have also told that most people smoke at the tracks. So just go to the recreational area of the track/park.

  2. Find out if there is picnic like area at the track. the ones I been to had them. They had grassy areas to the side of the grandstand where you could spread out a blanket and watch the races. You will be away from the drunks and the major betters.

also find out if they will let you bring your own coolers in.  You can have a nice day picnicking and stay out of the way of the drunks and gamblers.

also bring a stroller to walk around the grounds, most likely the track has some beautiful grounds between the parking lot and the grandstand.

Also spend some time at the preview stalls. this is an area where you can get a up close look at the horses in the upcoming race.

  3. i dont understand the question

  4. I have been going to the horses since I was the same age as your 16 month old.  I don't know which track you are going to, but this experience can be quite fun.  As mentioned before the track has several activities for children and adults.  Furthermore, most tracks have an area with private televisions.  You can watch TV and take care of your child.

I love to listen to the people cheer for their horse.  People get very exciteable.  It is not true that the track is filled with drunk, degenerate gamblers, neither is it crowded most of the time.

The reality of the situation is that you will have a great time if you want to.  If you are determined to have a bad time you will.
