Horse Racing: Famed trainer Vincent Timphony passes away at 76
The name of Vincent Timphony is included in the list of USA’s most celebrated and honoured trainers. He was the trainer of the first winner of the most exalted race run in America, the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Wild Again, Timphony’s trainee, won the Breeders
Cup in the year 1984. The famed trainer died on Monday at the age of seventy-six.
The trainer was struggling for life after he had been attacked by a series of strokes. He was removed from the life support machine at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. The hospital is situated right next to Santa Anita. According to his wife Scarlet Timphony,
he was taken off the ventilator on Saturday. When she was approached by the sports correspondents, Scarlet was reported as saying,
“The horses were in his blood. We are looking at the loss of one of the last Damon Runyon characters in the game.”
Timphony’s talent and admirable potential was realized by the critics and analysts of the sport, when his racehorse Wild Again stole the show at the Breeders Cup Classic under the jockey Pat Day. This was indeed a remarkable victory that Wild Again clinched
at Hollywood Park and bagged a purse money of $ 3 million. He was sent off as 31-1 favourite in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which was one of the 16 races that he started in the season of 1984, of his athletic career. The list of credentials that Timphony and
Wild Again share also includes the Grade I Meadowlands Cup. His wife also said that he was always confident about Wild Again, for the Breeders’ Cup. Talking about Wild Again in particular, Scarlet Timphony said that he was a unique horse and was always admired
by her husband.
The great trainer was an asset to the horse racing industry in America and was truly loved and admired by his fans, for his dedication towards the sport. Timphony was born in New Orleans. The last start of his remarkable athletic career was in the year 2002.
He passed away leaving behind his wife, five children, four grandchildren and one great-grand child.
