I bought a rescue horse and was told that she is registered. That there should be numbers tattooed on her neck? I haven't been able to find any numbers. I know she is an arabian. Would the numbers be any where else? what to look for?

  2. You are not going to find a tattoo number on her neck.  I've never even heard of tattooing a horse on the neck.  I work in horse racing and all race horses have a tattoo inside their upper lip.  So if she was tattooed that's where it would be.  Just flip her upper lip up and if it is there it should consist of about 5 characters 2 letters and 3 numbers.  Also don't quote me as I could be wrong.  But just because the horse is registered doesn't necessarily mean that the horse has been tattooed.  All registered horses that race have to be tattooed but if the registered horse wasn't used for racing I don't believe it is required for them to have a tattoo.  I know of several registered horses of different breeds that were never tattooed.  I owned a registered Appaloosa mare that was never tattooed and my dad owned registered Quarter horse mare that was never tattooed.  A friend of mine also owns a registered Arabian mare who was never tattooed either. Also do you have the papers?  If you have the papers the tattoo number should have been written at the top on right hand side.  For the most part I think this is a racing thing as it is required for indenification purposes and tattooing is expensive and owners have to pay to have it done by someone who is licensed and authorized to tattoo horses.  I hope this helps.

  3. Hi.  Sounds like this horse is a BLM horse.  They freeze brand numbers (code) onto their necks.  Check out the pics of a few at:

  4. Arabians aren't tattooed on the neck;  they are freeze-branded, and

If the horse is any color other than grey, the freeze brand, if done properly,  should show as white hair.  If the horse is grey, the freeze brand should show as exposed skin.  It's usually done on the side of the neck where the mane falls, so the mane covers the freeze brand under normal circumstances.

I don't think the freeze brand is required, although many Arabs do have it.  My horse had a freeze brand and you wouldn't normally see it unless you lifted his mane up and looked.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

  5. Your new horse may be an "Al Khamsa " Arabian- that is, she may have been registered by the US branch of the Egyptian Arabian Society, which is based in Lexington, KY. If she is registered with this organization, she will have been freeze-branded on the right side of her neck, under her mane, and the brand will have a symbol that looks like a capital A at the beginning of the brand. The word "Al Khamsa" is an old Bedouin word that means "the Five", which denotes the five original strain types that made up the Egyptian Arabian breed. If your mare carries the brand, she descends from one or more of those strain types, and it should be possible for you to trace her breeding and pedigree from the records that the Society keeps in their archives. The information may also give you a clue as to why she wound up in the hands of a rescue organization- a tragic fate for any horse of that breeding, which is highly prized in the Arab world. If your mare is grey, then the brand will appear as a white mark or marks under the mane- and the white will be very obvious if she is any other color. Horses who are flea bitten grays will have a darker brand marking on their necks. Hope this helps.
