  1. Ask your parents first. Do you want a horse for jumping? Western riding? Horses are expensive, and there are laws about keeping them. You also need some horse knowledge. You really shouldn't get a horse when you only want one for the thought of it. You should get riding lessons just to get to know how horses are. I have a 16.3 hh showjumping Thouroghbred gelding, and most of owning a horse is scooping up poo and squirting fly spray. There is barely any of the romantic, riding into the sunset stuff that you see on TV. You need a place to keep your horse, too. You can't just put it in the yard. My horse is over $6,000 a month, plus additional vet and farrier bills ranging from $500 to $4,500 a month. Horses are expensive and time consuming, and your parents really should know what they are doing.

    DO

    ~buy some books on horses

~meet and socialize with the horse you want multiple times    before buying it

    ~talk to a professional trainer

~arrange for a vet and a farrier to check the horse before buying (most sellers/rescue places have this done for free)

~look at the facility where the horse was living

~be prepared to spend more time and money than you have spent on anything else

    DON'T

~get a stallion - they are dangerous to even professionals and are unpredictable

~get a horse for the 'fun' - horses are great, but they are a lot of work

~get a horse that has been abused - they might be unpredictable

~get a horse without having met it and looking at the place where it lived

You might want to try leasing a horse before getting your own. Leasing is like renting, only you do all the work - basically you own a horse for a few months at a time.

    Good luck!
